Easy effective DIY solution to waterproof your deck for winter

There’s nothing like relaxing out on your deck in the hot summer months, but have you thought about getting it ready for the cold wet months?

Waterproofing your deck in preparation for the cold weather is an important step that will prolong your deck’s lifespan, sustain its finish, and save you time, effort, and money in the long run.

It will also give you a head start on enjoying your deck in the spring and summer!

What are the benefits of waterproofing your deck?

Your deck is a valuable asset to your property and one that is most likely highly used and enjoyed by family and friends. However, it is also most susceptible to deterioration, as it’s exposed to the various weather elements that Mother Nature throws at it.

By ensuring your deck is waterproof, you’ll be gaining these benefits:

  • Slip resistance
  • Protection against rotting
  • Eliminates excessive moisture
  • Extended deck lifespan
  • Save money on expensive damage
  • Less maintenance and upkeep
  • Maintains a clean appearance

How often should you waterproof your deck?

Depending on what type of deck you have, in general, decks require annual upkeep, especially if you live in an area that’s exposed to wet weather. This will ensure their structural integrity remains intact.

Sealing your deck will also prevent splintering, rotting and cracking. However, if it’s been well maintained and hasn’t been exposed to extreme weather conditions you may only need to seal your deck every 2-3 years.

By waterproofing your deck with a quality waterproof sealant, you will also be protecting your deck from harsh sun exposure, therefore allowing your deck to last longer while maintaining a pristine appearance.

If you find that your deck easily absorbs water, then it’s time to waterproof your deck to prevent it from rotting over winter.

An effective DIY solution to waterproof your deck for winter

Apply Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sealant and Liquid Rubber Deck Coating

Liquid Rubber Waterproof Sealant can be applied to most substrates including:

  • Metal
  • Aluminium
  • Wood
  • Some plastics
  • Fibreglass
  • EPDM, PVC, and bonds well to most coatings

Prepare your deck

Before waterproofing your deck, you will want to ensure a satisfactory surface for application and inspect the soundness of the existing substrate. Confirm the deck’s drainage is satisfactory and functioning properly.

If an existing coating is present, determine the compatibility by testing a small area with the waterproof
sealant. Ensure there is no moisture trapped in the substrate before coating.

Before applying the waterproof sealant treat any moss or mould with COHE Quick Clean.

Remove any contaminants such as silicone, oil, grease flaking paint, dirt, and dust. Clean the surface of your deck using a high-pressure hose or water blaster to remove all contaminants.

Allow the surface to fully dry and tape off areas you do not want any sealant applied to.

Application

The larger your deck is, the more you are going to need to coat it.

As a general guide:

  • Four litres will cover 8 – 10 square metres
  • Ten litres will cover 10 – 20 square metres,
  • Twenty litres will cover 25 – 40 square metres.

Apply the waterproof sealant using either a brush or roller to achieve an even 1mm thickness across the surface. Apply two coats if applying to the porous surface or requiring a greater thickness.

Once applied, leave to cure for 4-6 hours before the surface can be walked on. After 72 hours, you can apply deck coating.

Apply 2 coats of deck coating at around 1L/3sqm per coat, waiting for a minimum of 12 hours between coats.
